Daysail - Pt. Madison

Sailed over at noon to Pt. Madison, Windy, blowing 23-28 knots. Had 2 reefs in from the start and was still a bit uncomfortable with havnig a toddler aboard. We got into Pt. Madison and borrowed a boey for an hour. No nap from Hanna, so we left at around 3:30 and as soon as we were back heeled over at 25 knots, she fell asleep in the leewards side of the cockpit. We tied a strap from her life jacket to the boat for mental security.

Grandma watched Hanna and we took Impulsive out for a daysail. It's been too long! Pretty windy day, good exercise for putting reefs in under heavy wind. Blew 20-28 knots.

Diana took out her mom, Jen, her mother, Nancy and Tiffany. Spent the night at Winslow public dock. Sailed most of the way there and 1 hour on the way back then the wind died and motored the rest of the way back. Great trip.

Repeat trip of Blake Island and then Eagle Harbor - August

This trip is ideal for a toddler... Blake Island on the dock for 2 nights and Eagle Harbor Public Dock. Will be repeated many times more I'm sure.
We were determined to be at the dock on Blake Island so we parked at the temporary spot and walked the docks asking for someone to allow us to raft-up. We found a power boat. It's odd when people say "We don't raft up as a policy." Why? There's no wind... storm. Whatever.

Hanna got another cold at the end of this trip.
She also had a blast exploring the dock undersides with Pappa for mussles, crabs and buckets of baby jelly fish. At Eagle Harbor, there were quite a few starfish on the pilings from the low time. Good times.

Hanna frieked out when we motored from Blake to Winslow. Very long tantrum, face down on the cockpit bench. It was very sunny too, so when she calmed a bit we sprayed sunblock on her and she started screaming again for 10 minutes longer.

Daysail to Port Madison with friends

We left the dock right when the summer misty rain stopped. Sailing was perfect across and back and we had blue sky by the time we were back at the dock. So relaxing! That's saying a lot for having 3 kids on board. Plus a toddler who took 1.5 hours to fall asleep for a nap in the v-berth.

Mini-sailing vacation - Blake Island and Winslow Public Dock

Great weather! I took too long to get to write about this on the blog, so photos, will be our memories. It was a low key time, spending 2-nights at the island. Hanna had a cold, so it was a little tough that way, but it's hard to complain much when the sky is so blue.

Finally sailing again

We took a long winter break sailing and headed out for Eagle Harbor. Winslow public dock. We squeezed in and then later let a WYC boat raft onto us out of goodwill.

This was the first trip out with Hanna since she started walking! In May, we installed most of the lifeline netting. A bit more around the back to work out.

We got a new main sail, but the alterations didn't get completed, so it will wait for next season to get some action. This will be the last season for the current old mainsail.

Get a harness/leash - DONE and not necessary, but haven't tried it other than at the airport...
cover cockpit locker locks so clumsy falls don't hurt so bad - Skip it.
Finish up v-berth canvas wall - didn't happen... Using Pillow barrier.

Took Diana's parents out sailing finally. It's been a long time coming. We went out after the rain cleared up after lunch and had perfect conditions. Mearle sailed us around the point and towards Seattle and back. Jesper put Hanna down for a nap in the v-berth.

We've decided to join the Puget Sound Cruising Club (PSCC). We just found it this year after years of cruising on the sound. We're looking forward to making it to a raft-up this winter.

August 1 - Moved to Shilshole

We took a friend and his 3 year old daughter out for a daysail and it was our LAST time through the locks. We are now residents of the salt water. We're excited to be past the obstacle that makes sailing with a baby a pain, the Locks. Our next trip will probably be up to the Wooden Boat Festinval in Port Townsend in September. We must get a barricade set up so Hanna can safely nap in the v-berth. Otherwise, she'll have to sleep on the floor. She is crawling and could fall from any height. This trip was abit risky for her napping and we just piled blankets in the oening of the v-berth, and then saw her poke her head out when she woke up.
We also need to get the doors back on under the kitchen sink, she likes checking out the junk under there.

July 17-18 - Blakely Harbor

We took out friends from our baby group Brendan, Ellie, and baby Sierra. It was a great trip, but Hanna seemed to have just started a cold AND must have been beginning to teethe too. It was a rough night for Jesper and Diana. We dropped our guests at Eagle Harbor so they could grab the ferry home and we took a quick stroll in Winslow. The babies played well together on the floor so that was nice.
Anchoring in Blakely Harbor was quite nice.

May 15 - Sailing with Elizabeth

We found time to get Elizabeth out for a daysail on the sound. It was a gorgeous day for sailing and we kicked back and let Elizabeth take the wheel. Jesper helped Hanna nap in the v-berth and we learned more about sailing with a baby. Every time is different.

March 27-28 - Eagle Harbor

Farmor was in town from Sweden and we took a spring sail to Winslow. We took a dock spot and hung out in town. Hanna was all bundled up for the trip.

November 27-28 - Hanna's first sail

We took off with our new baby Hanna, while she was just sleeping. Luckily we made it through the locks and set sail for a relaxing cruise across the Sound to Pt. Madison.
We had her sleeping on her changing pad when we were on anchor and we wedged it in on the couch with pillows while we sailed.
It got quite windy in the middle of the night and we dragged anchor about 100 yards before someone motored out to us around 7AM and knocked on our hull to let us know. We'd been ignoring the noise, assuming it was just rocks on the chain during a swing. We've been so bad with the anchor this year, let's leave this as lessons learned in 2009. Basically we just didn't put out enough chain and we knew it and didn't fix it. BAD! Luckily we just drifted down the channel, not to shore.
The sail back was very brisk. Hanna just feel asleep as we got out into the heavier wind and that was perfect, because Diana would have gotten sea-sick if she'd stayed below with her. We made it all the way through the locks and then she awoke. I can't imagine it going that perfect again with sleep, so we will cherish the luck we had.

August 8-9 - Eagle Harbor

Girls only sailing weekend.

Everything went perfect!

We were the last into the large locks leaving, went right in and waited only 5 min for the small locks on return.
We sailed 3 hours in light wind Saturday and only got 1/2 way there, then motored the rest. There was amazingly no one at the public dock, so we went right in there at Eagle Harbor.
There was a light mist of rain in the morning, then by the time we were out on the water around noon, it was blue sky, but calm. It was pretty warm, so I convinced Michelle and Tiffany to jump off the boat into the water. They dove in a few times and then we motored back across.
Docking back at the marina was perfect! Why didn't I do this sooner?

July 6 - Kingston to home

Motored 2 hours to lock in 35 knots S. wind. Yuck. At least no rain, just lots of pounding spray. We waited ~45 minutes to get into the small locks. Quite a long time to hover inside the bridge outside the locks on a Monday morning! Back at the dock, somebody was wrongly moored in our slip and so we had to go in another slip and sort it out later.

Highlights of the trip:
Blue skies EVERYDAY!
No disasters
Saw porpoises most every day
Lots of bald eagles
Cute Pigeon Guillemots
Sea otters at Stuart Island, formerly almost extinct
Tanned faces (and other body parts)
Good sailing with screaming reaches
Sucia was fantastic! More hiking to be done next time on the South side.

July 5 - Roache Harbor to Kingston

We took off just after noon since we needed to sleep in a bit. The weather report also convinced us it was time to call the vacation to an end. We motored out via Mosquito Pass until the current no longer was on so strong and out to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. We had great sailing for 3+ hours. We decided to keep going istead of stopping in Pt. Townsend. We knew the wind was going to come strong in the Puget Sound inland waters. We sailed great with NW winds, then NE winds until Point no Point where the wind entirely shifted to a strong southerly and the rough weather was on for the evening. We took everything down quickly and motored toward Kingston. After a few hours, we got there around 11:30PM. We anchored outside the marina. It was a VERY rolly spot, but it held all night. The tide was very low when we got up, but we didn't check the depth, we just left straight away.

July 4 - Stewart Island to Roache Harbor

We started the day with a ride in Rubber Ducky to see a floating gallery Met a guy who anchors his gallery there in the summer, a custom floating "house" on an old set of catamaran pontoons. He lives on a sailboat docked alongside and even has a sauna on gallery boat.Jesper was inspired. The guy even sails all winter to get his photos that he sells in the summer of the islands.
We took a hike ashore and ate leftover pizza on the beach, walked up to the island schoolhouse.
Not enough wind to sail south to Roache Harbor, but we tried anyway We got into the harbor and anchored in a tight spot, had a yummy steak dinner. We decided to move to another spot, and it was closer to shore as well. We went ashore and had delicious ice cream visited the motor yacht dock scene. The fireworks were fun. We tested out a flare gun and a hand held flare and although expired by about 4 years, they proved good.
Around 3AM we had to pull anchor. We were thumping against the nearby, vacant powerboat. Not good! We found a new spot in the less crowded deeper water for the rest of the night.

July 3 - Friday Harbor to Stewart Island

Jesper took a shower on shore and Diana got the outboard spark plugs and yarn. Pumped out, saw a "tame" (not shy) Harbor Seal getting fat from the seafood store on the dock. It was cute. We bough smoked salmon which was delicious. We sailed all day, until 3:30PM when the wind ran out. Tacked up the channel. Wind was off and on 4-15 knots.
At Stewart Island, we anchored just inside the opening of the bay by a couple tiny islands. Jesper took rubber duckie to one of the islands and read on nearly got a sunburn in the setting sun. Diana made homemade pizza. No blowing winds this night, very calm and got a solid nights sleep!

July 2 - Jones Island to Friday Harbor

Woke up at 7AM. Rolling, very uncomfortably. We left 30 minutes later and sailed down to Friday harbor after some confusion in Jesper's head as to where we were going. We came really close to a "top 11" reef where boats run aground in the San Juans. Depth from 150-50 in seconds. At Friday Harbor we stocked up on everything, and picked up a PNW "girl froggy" as an ornament for inside the boat.
In Friday Harbor there was a "loosely" anchored sailboat drifting all over the bay causing us to feel like it was our anchor dragging. Later on the Port of F.H. came and towed it away as it came super close to many boats.

July 1 - Echo bay to Jones Island

Good sailing! (After a calm start!) We anchored at S. Bay of Jones Island which is an excellent state park. Large open field with an apple orchard. many camp sites. We visited the North Bat and deemed it unsafe for NW winds. They do have a dock, but it still would be uncomfortable. We chatted wit a man on an old school sailboat on the Northside, but then we got distracted by his cell phone.

June 30 - Echo Bay, Sucia Island

Rest day!
We stayed an extra day at anchor. The wind was very strong at night, gusting up to 37 knots! The boat really creaked at the anchor bridle and it was quite a tossing at night.
The wind was still high around noon. We took the dingy to Ewing Island on the NE side. No trails there. Found a good driftwood plank to take home for a bench. We enjoyed the view and got some great photos at the NE point of Sucia. We were glad we didn't decide to anchor in this inlet. It would only be OK on a State Park boey in this area. Back at the boat, we took naps and read a lot. Watched a DVD to complete our chill out day.

June 29 - Doe Bay to Sucia Island

Day started with light winds, but picked up and became strong. Up against big ebb tide we tacked. We were passed by big rescue vessels that we later found two of anchored in the same place, Echo Bay, as us on Sucia. We took "Rubber Ducky," our dingy to shore and explored the Northwest side of the island. We found seedlings of Pacific Madrone.

June 28 - Hunter Bay to Doe Bay

We sailed off anchor in a easy breeze, headed back through Lopez Pass. The current took us through with the sails up easily. Light winds made for a slow day, but no stress. We tried the spinnaker for a while poled out until the winds chanfged completely and it was time to just motor the rest. We decided Doe Bay was as far as we could make it, rather than make Clark Island which was the plan at first.

What a great place, Doe Bay, it was well protected from NW winds predicted at night. After dinner we dingyed in and forked over $30 to use the clothing optional hippie hot tubs and sauna. It felt great, although strong on the chlorine end. Lots of time to soak and enjoy the scenery from land. We took a short walk, fed some ponies in the field up the road and headed back to Impulsive for the night. It was a bit rolly, but a secure bottom.

June 27 - Seattle to Hunter Bay

We steamed out into the Puget Sound in a strong ebb tide. At Pt. Townsend we set sail to cross the Strait of Juan de Fuca to San Juan Island.
At Smith Island, we get passed by a perfect looking Catalina 36 under full genoa @7 knots. our Yankee is only propelling us at 6 knots. He looks stressed. We ease the sheets and go NE.
We power up to go through Lopez Pass. It's a flood tide now, and we zoom through @ 9 knots overground. it's been like that all day.
We anchor at E end of Hunter Bay. At 2AM we're dragging towards scary rocks. Jesper puts out more chain, maybe 20' and call it good. The dragging stops.

June 26 - Seattle departure - VACATION!

Impulsive is still dirty, but has received a new winch handle, a replaced main sheet block since one exploded and the dingy has been refueled (with too much oil mix as we found out later). After a good chat with Elizabeth Conner, Chuck and Marie at the dock, we departed with everything in order.

9:30PM we anchored just outside the locks to get a head start on the sail north to San Juan Islands.

May 22-25 - Memorial Day cruise

Jesper was down at the boat the night before wrestling with the water pump. Fixed pump (barely) using McGuyver technique, but then when fired up, a leak was discovered again. Reported to Diana that all must be ripped out!

Next day: turned on pump. Found leak. Tightened up hose clamp—done! We left shortly thereafter and motored across in the night to Port Madison. One hour after bedtime, chain rattling across rocks as usual, but then - big slam - and Diana awakes, "Jesper, fuck, fuck, up faster now!" It turned out that bow deck door to the anchor box has slammed shut in the wind...

Saturday: 10AM start. Low tide (-3'). Motored while Jesper cooked breakfast. Diana racing C&C 34, and after battling for 1 hour, we changed to Genoa 1. he gave up and sailed to East side of Sound. We started humming, plowing, steam train. 6.5 knots on the wind. Totally in a groove all the way to Port gamble. Another saw mill. At one time we did 6.5 through water and 1.8 over ground, it was a blast!!

Sunday: Got up at 9AM & pulled anchor right away to use the low tide to go under the bridge, channel to Port Townsend. The tide was super low (-3') and we were at MINIMUM depth during many moments in the crossing. Lowest on the depth gauge was ~6.7 feet. Not fun for Diana... Last time the crossing was also exciting, but was about clearing the mast top under the bridge, not a concern this time, it was clearing the seafloor! We made it of course and then after a bit, the wind came and we spent some time taking a leisurely sail into town. The wind built up & Jesper had to make a few extra loops for fun. We anchored outside the old ferry dock. It was very secure at first, tide came in, we were suspicious of dragging, but seemed good for the night. Many other boats here with the same idea. We got ice @ the subway store for gin&tonic for Jesper.

Monday: Chill morning at anchor then realized we had picked the exact spot at the anchorage with the under water pilings! We were cozy up to it and the anchor chain was wrapped around! Pulling up chain brought us ON it more, so we called over another boat and they took our line and pulled us away. Eventually, after Diana kept motoring in reverse while Jesper cranked and swore at the chain, we drifted off. With heads hanging low, we headed home. We sailed around the point and had some nice time with the spinnaker then the wind died and we motored the rest. Fueled up, pumped out.

Baby on Board - coming soon!

So we're looking forward to welcoming a sailor into the family, around mid-October. I found this article on Sailing with Kids and it's pretty encouraging. I think one of our winter projects will be to add a gate of some sort to the v-berth. We look forward to making many sailing attempts with our child. Our cat Stella, and the chickens will stay home still though. :)

Vashon Is. - Tramp Harbor - April 11-12

18-27 K of wind had up tacking South to the top of Vashon. Then the wind shifted and we had more of a straight shot South. Wind was in a safe direction for anchoring at Tramp Harbor. We visited our artist friend Elizabeth. She had up climb up the mussel and barnacle encrusted steel ladder to the piertop. The archorage was a very secure, mud bottom. Not safe for Easterly wind conditions though.

Sunday, it rained all day and we were back after motoring for 3.5 hours.

Sailed at about 3:30 to Eagle Harbor and we lucky enough to find a boat that let us raft up to at the City dock. Had a really nice walk in the evening before bed.
Dinner was also excellent. Italian sausage with bow-tie pasta, zuchinni and Prego saunce. Really yummy.

Quite windy too, about 20 knots on Saturday and 25 knots on Sunday - blowing from the North both days. Coming home with 2 reefs in the main was not uncomfortable, especially with the blue sky and sun!

Aug 23-24 - Blake Island

We took our friends Tiffany and Anders out sailing to Blake Island. We had perfect weather on Saturday, wore lots of sunscreen and sailed all the way by spinnaker. It was a light wind, but the sun felt great.
We forgot the ice for our mojitos and were lucky enough to get a small bag of it from the first power boat that cruised by our anchorage of the West side of Blake Island. We played UNO into the night and slept great.
The morning winds were up and we got some invigorating sailing in before the rain hit us for the last 4 hours of the trip home. We motored for and hour, then were able to sail straight back the Shilshole, using autopilot and radar to stay out of the rain. At least it was warm rain and we were in good company!
The locks were easy and we got some dogfish filets from a boat tied up to us in the locks. We ate it for dinner and it was tasty.

We sailed out of the large locks for an evening with Jesper's co-worker, Heather and her boyfriend Bobby. It to FOREVER to get out of the locks. Apparently the small locks are closed for the summer (until October??) so it was a long wait. Luckily we had good conversation and dinner to cook to keep us occupied while waiting.
After we got out of the locks it POURED rain.

Overall, it really added a variation to all the times we've been out sailing. Every time really is different!

June 27-29 - Blake Island

Our friends from Sweden came and we sailed to the West side of Blake Island Friday night and then Eagle Harbor on Saturday. Diana took the ferry back to Seatte for her Bridal Shower and everyone sailed back on Sunday.

The weather was the hottest weekend we've had all summer and it was fantastic! We took a trip to the beach on Blake and Jesper and Magnus trail ran all the way around the island. After that, they swam and we walked to the marina side to get icecream.

May 24-25 - Blakely Harbor

We took it easy and headed out at 4PM to Blakely harbor, the wind was perfect to sail straight there. The anchorage was rocky and a bit rolly, but it was nice to get away. Hearing the anchor chain drag accross the rocks is not ideal, but it worked. Sailing back, we had another great run and didn't have to jib. What a beautiful day!

April 19-20 Crazy weather - We sailed rain or shine

Destination Eagle Harbor.

The weather was cloudy, rain, hail, sun and snow. Luckily we sailed in cloudy, sunny and then hail. Horray for skipping the rain and snow while we sailed. Perfect timing. Wonderful sail on the way over, started with 2 reefs and shook them hout halfway there. A squal came just when it was time to lower the sails and navigate around the reef. Then it hailed.

We got to walk aboard the Adventuress which was docked in Eagle habor and happened to be open to the public. It was fun to tour inside. No photos from inside since we went in after jogging 5K around the island.

Diana got some yarn at her favorite yarn store and also some green vine ribbon for the wedding cake. Jesper got a book on little hideaway houses.

New marina

The weather wasn't quite there for us to go sailing, so we just moved the boat to our new Ballard marina. We have a dock box there, so we took home the dock box we had been using. Luckily our power chord just reached from the stern to the dock.

We are going to go sailing this weekend (don't know where to). It's been the longest we've ever not been out on the water. We haven't sailed since November I think. When we return from the weekend, we are going to have a new marina in Ballard. We're excited to explore "Old Ballard" more this summer.

Diana took the boat out with a few friends in February when Jesper was away in Munich and is ready to try it again after finding out that she forgot where to attach the jib sail tack.

We headed up to the Bob Perry Rendezvous at Port Ludlow with some foodie friends, Beth and Asela. The wind provided an awesome spinnaker run all the way North. The sun came out and we all had a fabulous time chilling out and napping.
Beth took some great photos on the trip, now Diana is dreaming more about an SLR. She also brought an amazing appetizer. Stilton cheese, quince paste, and carmelized shallots on cracker bread. So amazing, maybe we'll have this at our wedding.
Another bonus for the weekend was that we slid in and out of the large locks with no painful hovering at the gate!

August 18-19 - Blake Island

We took my cousin Alex sailing for the first time. The weather didn't look good, but luckily being out on the Puget Sound, the rain clouds stick closer to land. We didn't get rained on Saturday until after we had tied up to the marina. It poured rain during the night and Sunday morning, but when we eft it has stopped and it was nice the rest of the way home.
I think we freaked Alex out about using the boat toilet, he ended up never using it and opting to hold it until we were on land. Using a toilet with a swich can be intimidating for a 13 year old I guess. Next time, we won't tell our new passengers that they will sink the boat if they forget to switch the lever back to closed.

Homeward bound

Currently, we're sailing S down the puget sound. The sun has set, the radar has ben turned on & we should be at the Locks in 3 hrs. Thurs. was spent sailing, motoring then saling on through the night until 5:30am. We saw Orca closer than any other whale sighting. Jesper sailed the early AM push to Pt Angeles for US customs in 30K NW winds, surfing waves while D snoozed. We rested there until today. We could stop tonight, but it's too tempting to transit the locks w/o traffic. Let hope we can rouse the draw bridges after midnight!

Motored initially and sailed through all conditions yesterday from Hesquiat village N of Hot Springs cove to Effingham Bay. Today we're enjoying the sun in the quiet bay, watching an eagle or two. Baking bread this afternoon.

Quait Bay

Quait Bay was unique. It had a really nice floating hotel and spa built into a roaring creek. The hotel had been closed for 2 years and there were workers preparing it to be towed 100 miles to another location where people could come via land, this place was only reacable by boat or seaplane. We too a walk up the wooden stairs to the lake with a erie feeling after being warned to watch out for bears. A lake was at the top, perfect for swimming if the weather hadn't been so drizzly. We caught two dogfish from the boat, but they both broke the line and got away.
We took a dinghy trip out to an extremely remote hermit (friendly we read) floating home. It was too late to knock on the door, but we were able to appreciate their hard work. They had a huge garden on the dock.

Tofino

Looks like our last message didn't make it. We're in Tofino now checking how the blog posts via satellite worked. We'll resend from the boat today.

The weather has been good, but now, the clouds are in for a few days. No rain since Monday though. We saw whales yesterday, not close enough to tell what kind though. The ride North from the Broken Group was a little rough at time, there wasn't enough wind so the ocean swell made us really queasy. Diana couldn't hold it in, but felt better after.

We've seen a ton of Bald Eagles. Jesper is now getting focused on trying to catch a fish. He has never caught on before and it's tough to see all the fishing boats coming in with their haul. Last night he changed the oil in the engine.

Tonight we're headed North, inland to a small cove, then on Sunday, we'll be in Hot Springs Cove.

Blue skies since Monday afternoon. After loosing the lead weight for the salmon tackle, we headed towads our desination, Marble Cove. Had a nice sunset & watched Bald Eagles fish. In the AM, we took the dinghy to search out caves. Yesterday we sailed to Pipestem Inlet and took a nice anchorge in Cataract Cove. We took the dinghy a .5hr up to a thundering waterfall where we took a bath. We got away right when the mosquitos zoomed in on us.

This morning had some fog, but it lifted. We salied out to Clake Island today, spotted whales. Tricky navigating, we really had to 3X check the chart/GPS so we don't hit a rock. The isand here has nice sandy beach and some tide pools to explore.

We were able to make it to Victoria in 12 hours non-stop. We sailed until 4AM, then motored the last 5 hours, running into fog around 8AM, which cleared just when we got to the harbor entrance to our relief. Convinced by the good weather report, we only spent the day in Victoria, half napping. We departed the harbor in the rain at 9:40PM and set up our GPS waypoints.
Sun. 1:15PM, we tied up in Bamfield. The trip took 15.5hours, all motoring. We expected a SE breeze, but no. Along the way, we saw few ships on the radar, we stayed out of the shipping lanes. By the time we were out in the ocean, the left over swell from the wind that didn't hit us was short and heavy, making the ride only possiblle by laying sill in our berths to avoid seasickenss. Bamfield is a nice village, we walked to Bradley beach last night and made pizza for dinner from Jesper's homemade dough.
Today, we took it easy, tiinkered with the outboard and now we are in Trevor Channel...salmon fishing.

We are pretty much ready to set off tonight. We haven't sent a test mail from the boat via satellite yet, hopefully it works tonight!

Jesper jumped to it this month and replaced the steering cables, installed solar panels and installed the satellite. Now even more people are going to be looking at us, wondering what kind of world cruising we've been up to.

I've been getting the menu together and have made 4 shopping trips. Last night I made beef stroganoff to eat this weekend. I still need to prepare the lettuce and carrots from the garden.

Now won't the rain quit so we can get into full vacation mode?!

Around Whidbey Island May 24-28

Wednesday night we sailed out to Pt. Madison to get a head start on the trip. The night before, we loaded the boat with food so we'd be ready to go. We ended up motoring all the way to get there in time to get a goo night's sleep.
Thursday AM we headed north and sailed to Elger Bay. It seemed a bit exposed, but was sheltered enough from a Northerly and the next anchorage, Freeland, Honeymoon Bay was farther and didn't seem a lot better.
Friday AM we sailed off from anchor and had a long day of tacking up Saratoga Passage. Good sailing though. After turning East over Camano Island, we motored when the wind died and went into La Conner.
La Conner was very cute, most shops were closed for the night, but it was a nice walk around town and out to the farm fields. A local had been watching Diana dock and saw her on the street and had to compliment her on a good docking job. There are often strong currents in the channel that La Conner sits on and boats tend to have an ungraceful entrance. We ate dinner at the local "micro-brewery" and played some board games.
Sunday we planned to be through Deception Pass and timed it, but ended up arriving at the bridge an hour early. Lots of little boat fising along he cliff walls, Jesper gave it a shot, but of course, we've never caught a fish. After we saw one sailboat go through, we followed suit andwent for it. It wasn't all that bad, we did the right thing and wait for slack tide. On the other side, we tied up on a State Park float in Bowman Bay. We took the dinghy ashore and had a great hike to the bridge and watched bald eagles soaring above and below. We also dug up a baby Madrona tree on the way back for home, we'll see if it survives.
Afterwe went to bed the wind really picked up and we layed in bed unable to sleep for 3 hours and ended up deciding to move the boat off the floating dock to a mooring boey. The wind and waves were blowing straight into our bay and it took 6 attempts to get the mooring tied down. We went straight to bed to avoid getting sea sick and slept lightly until it morning and we booked it out of there. The wind in the straight we blowing strong and the waves were large, maybe 5' swell. We motored for quite a while to get a good position to sail toards Pt. Townsend. The boat tossed pretty rough, but over all, we had things stowed well and that really helps a lot.
After we passed a certain point, with a green boey, the seas became more well behaved and sailing was much more comfortable. It was hard to say how windy it was a first, the wind meter got stuck at 40 knots. The wind seemed to be 20-38 knots. Totally gusty. The boat was more uncomfortable in 20 knots, than 25 with the wave action. We decided to continue to Pt. Ludlow and had a very calm anchorage there. We took a walk on the beach and had a very early bedtime.
Monday we motored all the way back to Seattle. The wind didn't show up until we were almost back.

Blake Island

The weekend was slated for sailing - so by 4PM Saturday, we left the dock and headed out to Blake Island State Park. The tide and wind was perfect and we didn't have to tack (made a turn) until we were almost there. The trip took a few hours, sometimes it can take 4 hours. A friendly sailboat let us raft up to the last spot next to the dock and we started the quest we had come for.
Jesper got it in his head that we were going to find a Madrona tree sapling and bring it home. We set out examining the ground and trees and I helped Jesper notice differences between leaves and named what I knew. We decided to walk around the island. About 10 minutes in, it started to rain pretty hard. By the time we circles the island, we had been drenched and had traversed many mud puddles. We saw a lot of deer wandering in the dark.
We've heard that Madrona don't transplant well, and so that challenge made Jesper want to get one badly. He thought he'd found one at the beginning of the hike and after dinner he snuck out into the dark and spent some time with a knife, spoon and a raccoon digging at the wrong species, it wouldn't come up anyway. Somehow we had started out grabbing the wrong example leaf. Sunday we got the right leaf and still found no saplings. It was fun to look anyway.
There was only enough wind to take us half way home, so we motored back and had time when we got home to mow the lawn, make dinner and relax.

Friday night was celebration for Jesper paying off the boat mortgage!

Saturday morning we leisurly went out to the Sound with no plan. The sky was really grey but no rain. We were able to sail for about 45 minutes and then the wind died.

We saw 3-4 porpise and Diana got them interested to play on the bow by making screcking noises. They kept surfacing and blowing air out. It was very exciting!

We decided to stay in Eagle Harbor since there was plenty of time left and then we could walk around town. We got a spot on the public dock and visited the shops.

We were hanging out in the cockpit drinking margaritas and another Valiant sailboat came by looking for a spot. We offer them to raft up and from there on, we had an entertaining night getting to know S.V. Meghan.

Sunday was a perfect sailing day for our ride home. The skies were blue and the breeze fresh.

August 26-27 Blake Island

Fabulous warm weather made this last weekend to Blake Island almost tropical. We napped, laid on the beach and hiked the island.

Amy and Robb joined us and had a great time on their first overnight sailing cruise! They were great passengers even tough they didn't know a cleat from a boat hook.

We took a spot in the marina between two poles called "dolphins." Very calm moorage. Every weekend we've seen phosphorescent in the water. When I flushed the toilet in the dark, you could seem a few lighting up in the bowl!

Sailed to Port Ludlow for the 10th Annual (Jesper's 5th) Robert Perry Redezvous. We got a late start with slow opening bridges and a long wait to get into the locks. Had some wonderful sailing both days (despite the lost winch handle).

The Seattle summer is really giving us some perfect weekends!

July 12-13 Blakely Harbor

Blakely Harbor is a perfect getaway with a view of Seattle, on the south end of Bainbridge, one harbor South of Eagle Harbor. We took the dinghy for a spin around the entire area looking for a public entry to land. In the inner habor, there is the old mill which is now a cement grafitti block. We tied up to a cement block next to the jetty and explored. The area has been recovering from it's logging days and has interesting sea grasses. The tide was coming in extra high and we could see the canals fill into the wetlands.
Locals we fishing with sea worms, they caught some perch. We saw how they get the worm out of the tube, it was really gross, but interesting.
Solid archoring, but quite a bit of swell comes in from the shipping lanes.

We headed out Friday night about 8PM and had a great beam read sail to Pt. Madison. The phosphorescence was in some sort of mating season and the water was as sparkly as the sky. We could see fish dart around the boat because the water lit up around them as they moved. Since the water was so alight, we though maybe the fish were the size of the light. Jesper got out the fishing pole at my insistence. Got some nibbles, but no fish. I wish we could have taken a photo of the water. Even the circle a drop of water on the surface made a light ring. This would have been an amazing time for SCUBA diving, like being Peter Pan & Tinker Bell, flying with magic stars surrounding their bodies.

Jesper left the lure hanging in the water overnight and a fish was attached in the morning, it was only 3 inches long.

We took a long relaxing morning Saturday to relax. We decided to cook up the salmon I had bought the night before at Trader Joe's, the packaging was stinking up the fridge, so we thought to get it outta there. Lesson learned: If salmon packaging is super stinky, so much, you want to wave your hands in the air, even if you wash the salmon - then BBQ it until it looks cooked. It's STILL going to be stinky ... rotting salmon. Instead of fishing in Pt. Townsend, we fed the fish salmon for lunch.

At 2PM we headed to Poulsbo with the incoming tide through Agate Passage. A little sailing was had along the US Navy torpedo testing area. We took a fine anchorage in between two marinas and zoomed into town with the dinghy. Half the stores were closed or closing when we got in, but we were able to pick up some Norwegian flatbread, a Swedish boat flag and some candle oil. We followed our noses and went to the restaurant in town that had the most customers. Yummy authentic Italian pizza. On the way back in, there was a mother harbor seal laying on a floating log raft and her baby bobbing up and down out of the water nursing. We got close enough to hear the baby sucking and snorting, but mommy seal was watching us intently.

Sunday AM, more relaxing and then went back to town so Diana could see the 2 knitting stores and fabric store. It was worth the trip!
We motored back to the sound from Agate Passage and set sail and had a great ride home in steady 18-20K wind. We were lucky that the only rain that hit us was during the dinghy ride Sunday AM. The clouds were all over, it depended where you were if there was rain or sun.

Slept in (this will be a trend), went into town on dinghy. Entered at different dock - west of downtown below a pub. Found a pub, Doc's, showing World Cup Soccer. Diana did some yarn shopping. France won.
Departed Eagle Harbor about 2:30PM and had great wind down through Colvos Passage, caught the current through the Narrows while eating dinner and took a right to the West and had a perfect beam reach sail on Genoa alone into our first new port, Mayo Cove - Penrose State Park.

Explored State Park. Very warm day.
Took a narrow strait South. Jesper got a stomach ache.

Monday, July 3
Explored Hope Island. Pulled anchor and drifted North. Found out there was a bridge in the way of planned route to Jarrel Cove State Park. Archored for the afternoon outside the OYC outpost. We used their beach for sunbathing despite their advise of No Trespassing. Ready for high tide, we took a technical trip in through Hammersly Inlet. Dropped anchor just as it got too dark. Air smelled of sawdust.
Wildlife: Seals, Chipmunk, Red Rock Crab, starfish, unknown flying bird, Common Merganser.

Tuesday, July 4
Explored the lumber town of Shelton, not advised for tourists. Watched 1st half of World Cup in the local dark tavern. Got back to the dinghy before it floated away. Made it back out of the Inlet witout running aground, we officially rounded "Cape Horn" as well!
Dinner with Diana's family on the boat anchored at Boston Harbor. Diana went home by car, Jesper prepared boat for single handed sailing North. Great breeze!

Jesper anchored in Gig Harbor, got up at 10AM and went into town to see the World Cup match, docked at restaurant dock. Sailed by Genoa back to Seattle, arrived at Lake Union 9PM.

June 2-4 Eagle Harbor and Blake Island

We decided to get a full weekend of sailng in and headed out Friday night. We sailed in unexpected winds 20-30K to Eagle Harbor. Found a great archorage snuggled between the other permanent boats and got up early the next day to watch tennis. Eagle Harbor is neat because it has a lot of OLD boats anchored and many of them haven't been sailed in a long time, so long that they are growing moss.

Saturday we parked at the dock after breakfast and the French Open for a stroll through town. We had a nice lunch and each went to our favorite stores. Diana, knitting, Jesper, books. After our 3 hours of free dock time was up, we sailed around Blakely Rock towards Blake Island. We ran out of win, but the weather was so nice, we didn't mind sitting in dead calm for a while. We ended up motoring the rest of the way to the SW side of Blake Island where we anchored on a rocky bottom. Diana felt like the day was a little too lazy, so we waxed the topsides of the cockpit to a shiny bright white. Dinner was perfect in the cockpit and the sunset got better.

Sunday morning was all foggy and rainy. It had rained in the night. Rain and fog was gone when we sailed off. We triend out the Monitor windvane for autompilot, but it couldn't keep up with the gusts and took up off course very easily. We hit some storm showers and had a little excitement heading South. When we turned around to head North, it was a perfect broad-reach strait back to Shilshole.

Boat Work

Shelving has been installed in the hole behind the back rest. This project is doubling this storage area! Since this photo, the shelves have been painted. Another quicky project was to place a bungee chord across the nav station side storage area so the pencil can may never fly to the floor again!

About a month ago, rail was installed for the bookshelf also. It still needs to be varnished. This solves another problem of flying books when the boat heals.

This weekend a neighbor cat came aboard for a snoop around and relaxed on the couch for a bit.

With Diana taking on her new challenges at Expedia, we decided to set sail to clear our minds and get out in the sun. For 70 days we have not been taking any sextant readings due to the thick clud covers over Seattle, and for just 30 days we have owned a sextant, so empowered by these new tools we set out to explore the San Juan Islands yet again....

Feb 8
Slept in. Packed up the boat with tons of food. Set sail out of Shilshole at 2:15PM, Wind were 20-30K, even though the forecast was 10-15K. Diana felt a little sea natious, the wind waves were quite rough for our beat north. Lots of shipping traffic to dodge. Only 2 or 2.5 hours of saling, but pretty tiring. Moored at Kingston with reciprocal before sunset - took a walk and ate crepes at a cafe near the ferry dock. This was a good refresher on how much we heal, what sails to set etc.

Feb 9
Pefect Blue Skies! Slept in, pumped out. Set sail in 25-35K winds. Beat North to Port Townsend. Rough wind waves. We generally sailed with both the staysail and the yankee and one reef in the main, bt at times we furned the yakee in altogether. It was really rough, and we took on tons of water through the anchor box. The box i not drained, and this definitely has to be fixed as it's getting frustratig with wet bedding after a day at sea. Great views of Olympics and Cascades. Took a new route to Pt. Townsend - in the shipping canal under a bridge of 58Ft. Tide was low - we made it under without breaking anything off the mast! Motored in dark to Boat Haven Marina, reciprocal spot taken, we snuck in on an empty end dock and paid in the morning. Totally tired - tempted to sleep at 8:30pm.

Feb 10
Slept in :) No clouds in sight. Headed North on perfect 10-15K winds. Gorgeous day. Were diverted by a coast guard boat protecting a submarine - we got an up close view of the sub sliding by. Didn't make it as far as Friday Harbor as planned. By sunset we were aimed at James Island. The float was out of the water so we decided to anchor in Decatur Bay. Good spot, rolling wake from the ferry every hour or so.
Jesper spent time in the evening calculating his sextant readings. Great views of Olympics and Mt. Baker.

Feb 11
Pulled up anchor around 930am. Heaed south with a perfect E 10K breeze. Sextant readings from 1130am - 1210pm -Jesper is dedicated to figure it out! We estimtaed our position to within 3 miles! Wind dies before lunch. On and off motoring the last bit to Port Townsend. Can't make it farther due to tide against our favor at 3pm. Got the reciprocal mooring spot at the marina this time. Took showers and hopped on a bus into town. Did a little impulse shopping (mouse welded together) and hung out at a coffee house until t closed (6pm!). Bus back to boat in time to make dinner and relax.

Feb 12
Motored out of Pt. Townsend just before 10am. Tide on ebb, so couldn't go under 58' bridge again. Decided to motor all the way home to make it in time for change in tide. About 1:30p between Point No Point and Apple Cove Point, we hit a large log. No damage luckily. In the locks at 4:15pm. Packed up and eating hot past at 6pm.

Back to the working world...and civilization.

It’s long overdue to take a look at the electronic charting system on board and today I ordered an NMEA multiplexer with RS232 output and FUGAWI electronic charting software. The plan is to take a close look at the hookup between the various devices on board in December and have everything ready for rock ‘n roll come spring.

Also, in order to drive the 12V PC on board it will be necessary to build a voltage regulator since while under power the charging voltage will sometimes approach 14.4V and this is causes the PC to hang and it may even cause damage of some sort. So in short, it’s time to bring out the soldering iron again! Stand by for updates.

However before anything else happens it’s time to take off to Australia and the Great Barrier Reef (the largest living organism) and check out any cool fish that are hanging out there.

Pots, dishes storage

The hole that once was a scary pile of dishes and pans is now an organized oasis with a light that turns on when the door is opened.

Other Impulsive news... the rain has come and the winter tarp is covering the cockpit now. Saturday's sun compared with Sunday's rain made winter seem closer than before.

This weekend Impulsive was fitted with her own reefing hooks. No more Cunningham line to hold that reef down.

The Lazy Jack's are now held out-of-service with new bungee and clips.

The annoying dishes/pots kitchen storage compartment had new features! 2 shelves, and utensil rack and a fresh paint job.

Here is a photo of the job part way through. A final shot will come next week.

And of course breakfast is always something yummy on the weekends like... pancakes!

Eagle Harbor - Oct 8-9

Lazy morning in Bellevue. Headed to Seattle and was out of the locks and setting sail at about 2:30PM. Anchored at Eagle Harbor before sunset, just when the rain started. Perfect sailing upwind reaching hull speed.

Warm fire all evening. Baked a cake. Read. Knitted. Delicious pork tenderloin dinner.

Sunday AM rain. By the time we pulled up anchor, rain was gone. Went to pump out on City dock and snuck into town for a short walk and browse.

Great spinnaker run all the way back to Shilshole. Ate cake while waiting for small locks.

Evening in Bellevue spent sewing up dodger panels for Impulsive.
